To help you fine-tune the performance of the Ryzen 5 3600X, AMD offers the Ryzen Master software utility, which is compatible with all Ryzen CPUs. This enables much faster data throughput for solid-state drives, and could also improve the performance of future graphics cards. We were among the first publications to review the Ryzen 5 3600 and at $200 we found the 6-core, 12-thread processor a crankinâ good deal. Here, the results closely mirrored those of the Cinebench all-cores test, with the Ryzen 5 3600X faster than all but the Ryzen 7 3700X and the Core i7-8700K. © 2021 TechSpot, Inc. When running on just a single core, the Ryzen 5 3600X was a tad slower than both the Ryzen 7 3700X and the Core i7-8700K. The 3600X increased total system consumption by just 4% when measuring power draw from the wall. Finally, no matter what your reason for buying a new CPU, it's hard to argue with the Ryzen 5 3600X's backwards motherboard compatibility and support for the cutting-edge PCIe 4.0 standard. We recommend avoiding the 3600X and instead buy the more affordable $175 Ryzen 5 3600. While a PC's GPU is the most important factor in determining its performance on demanding AAA games, the CPU can also play a role. The 3700X does offer a small performance boost over the 3600X in Shadow of the Tomb Raider but the 3600X was only up to 3% faster than the 3600. The Ryzen 5 3600X did admirably here, besting all comers except for the Ryzen 7 3700X on the all-cores Cinebench test. Meanwhile the single core performance sees an increase of just 3%, going from 481 pts to 497 pts. Not at all. Whatever we learned in years past with the 1600 and 2600 series does not apply here. Having tested both R5 3600 models (see all of that further down below), here's the tale of the tape: Both CPUs were tested on the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Xtreme with 16GB of G.Skillâs FlareX DDR4-3200 CL14 memory and a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti on the graphics side. As such the 3600 gets the 65w Wraith Stealth and the 3600X the 95w Wraith Spire. The Core i5-9600K, however, lacks support for both PCIe Gen 4 and Hyper-Threading (Intel's marketing term for multithreading). Finally, the Ryzen 5 3600X is no substitute for a high-end CPU of the type you'd expect to install in a serious gaming rig or multimedia editing workstation. The CPUs themselves are otherwise identical. If you don't want to pay the $80 premium for the Ryzen 7 3700X, however, the Ryzen 5 3600X is an excellent option. Like most AMD chips, it lacks integrated graphics, but it makes up for it in terms of multithreading and easy overclocking, two features that some of its Intel competitors lack. The 3600 becomes a 3600X with the Wraith Spire and the 3600X becomes a 3600 with the Wraith Stealth. Its clock speeds are similar, at 3.7GHz base and 4.6GHz boost, and it has the same 95-watt rated power consumption. These include the Core i5-9600K, a six-core chip that at $263 costs roughly the same as the Ryzen 5 3600X. It also offers significant ancillary benefits—much larger caches and PCI Express 4.0 support—that will appeal to upgraders and system builders who seek a degree of future-proofing. The only thing that makes the R5 3600 a 65 watt TDP part, is the 65 watt cooler, while the 3600X is a 95 watt TDP part because it comes with a 95 watt cooler. Other than to improve AMDâs margins thereâs no reason for the 3600X to exist. You can basically swap the coolers around and reverse the results. We're not into guessing games at TechSpot, so we've run some hard benchmarks to decide. Stock cooler is fine for stock clocks but it's pretty noisy. For now, the third-generation Ryzen CPUs are the only ones to feature PCIe Gen 4. £200.00 GBP. One of the sweet spots of the new lineup is the Ryzen 5 3600X ($250). The chip clocks between 3.6 ⦠Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 vs. GeForce RTX 2080: What's the Difference? The original $50 markup has been lowered since AMD released the CPUs in mid 2019. Follow him on Twitter @branttom. AMD Ryzen 5 3600X processors are ideal for serious high-definition gaming with 6 cores, 12 threads, and a max boost clock of 4.4GHz. Both the Ryzen 5 3600X and Core i5-9600K come with three-year warranties. At stock, we found the 3600X to offer a very mild performance increase (5% or less) compared to the vanilla 3600. Join thousands of tech enthusiasts and participate. Hampers performance on some demanding games. The only other change in specification is the TDP, the R5 3600 is a 65 watt part and the 3600X a 95 watt part. Our two samples were bought on retail and from this tiny sample that wasnât the case, both were limited to 4.2 GHz at 1.35v and both could boot into Windows at 4.3 GHz, but even with 1.4v failed even a basic stress test. AMD also currently includes three free months of Xbox Game Pass for PC with the Ryzen 5 3600X. If you really want to eke out the fastest frame rate, it's worth investing in a more potent Ryzen 9 or Core i9. RDNA architecture is engineered for the next generation of high-performance gaming. The only PC builders who should probably shun the Ryzen 5 3600X are gamers or content creators whose workflows call for voracious computing resources. In short, it murders the 9600K in core-heavy productivity benchmarks and is right there for gaming, offering better 1% low performance often, all while costing notably less. The cache size is important for apps that need fast access to a system's memory, a category that includes many graphics-intensive PC games. AMD provides a very capable Wraith Spire cooling fan in the box with the Ryzen 5 3600X, which will likely provide all the cooling you need to run the chip at its stock clock speeds. Yes, you get a better cooler out of the box, but usually the asking price premium is not worth it. We see the same in Battlefield V, the 3600X was only up to 2 fps faster than the non-X model, so about the same performance. The main differences are its base and boost clock speeds of 3.6GHz and 4.2GHz respectively. The end result is a good one, you can save money. We only see a 1 fps difference in The Division 2 and we should also note that the 3600X and 3600 match the 3700X in this title and we saw a similar thing when testing with Battlefield V and Assassinâs Creed Odyssey. On the other hand, some games aren't as limited by CPU performance, such as Counter Strike: Global Offensive. If you're building a powerful PC to perform these tasks, you'll want to invest in a far more capable processor, such as a Ryzen Threadripper or Intel Core i9. Rocket Lake, Ryzen 5 5600X vs. Ryzen 7 5800X vs. Ryzen 9 5900X vs. 5950X: GPU Scaling Benchmark. Ethics Statement Terms of Use Privacy Policy Change Ad Consent Advertise. We havenât discussed manual overclocking. If you're building a PC from scratch, the Core i5-9600K's lack of an included CPU cooling solution also counts against it. If you want to reduce the operating volume and squeeze a tiny bit more performance out of this great-value Ryzen 5 processor, we recommend you grab something like the Cooler Master 212 for about $30. Our Cinebench test is one of the best predictors of performance on resource-intensive tasks such as rendering a 3D image. So itâs pretty clear by this point that in terms of performance the 3600 and 3600X are basically the same. Keep an eye on your inbox! This time the 3600X reduced the render time by just 4% when testing with Blender, at this point youâre probably starting to question why we need two 6-core/12-thread Zen 2-based CPUs. AMD explains how they calculate the TDP for Zen 2 processors in the review guide, but it doesnât help address the issue as there are variables we donât know, such as the optimal operating temperatures for each part. AMD Ryzen 9 3900X vs. Intel Core i9-9900K: Which High-End CPU to Buy? In addition to the small clock speed uptick, however, the third generation boasts a major cache improvement: The Ryzen 5 3600X carries a considerable 35MB Level 3 cache, a capacity it shares with the Ryzen 5 3600. Before wrapping this up letâs have another look at power usage, this time focusing on CPU package power and core current. There are currently two third-generation Ryzen 5 chips based on AMD's latest Zen 2 microarchitecture, the Ryzen 5 3600X and Ryzen 5 3600. Both of the third-gen Ryzen 5 chips feature 24 CPU-based PCI Express 4.0 lanes and 16 chipset lanes. The six-core AMD Ryzen 5 3600X is an excellent mainstream CPU, offering proficient performance, multithreading, and overclockability. We suspect the reason so many of you asked for this comparison is once again the misleading TDP ratings. The successor to our favorite best value CPU, the Ryzen 5 3600 is AMD's new $200 6-core, 12-thread processor. (A third Ryzen 5 CPU, the Ryzen 5 3400G, is technically part of the third generation but costs less and uses the older Zen+ microarchitecture.). The Cinebench R20 multi-core shows a very mild 2% increase in performance for the 3600X over the vanilla 3600.
